The port of Volos is one of the biggest regional ports of Greece and a founding member of MedCruise.

The port's strategic location in central Greece, between the two biggest ports of the country, Piraeus and Thessaloniki makes the port of Volos an ideal base for visiting the undiscovered central Greece.

The port is handling cargoes (containers, dry bulk and general cargoes) and facilitates passenger traffic (cruise and coastal).

Volos is connected by ferries with the Sporades islands complex and occasionally with the North Aegean Sea islands.

Moreover, it provides a marina close to the Main PIER 4 with a capacity of 170 yachts and sailing boats.

General Description of the Port of Volos

The port of Volos has a direct connection with major urban regions of Greece via the major motorway Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki. The port infrastructure includes five piers, with a total length of 3.195 meters and depth of up to 11 meters.

Main PIER: Surface 33.650 sq. m. / Three docks (285m., 115m. and 301m.) / Depth between -5 and -11 m.

Main PIER 1: Surface 56.000 sq. m. / Three docks (474m., 152m. and 366m.) / Depth between -10 and -11 m.

PIER 2: Surface 67.000 sq. m. / Three docks (412m., 95m. and 445m.) / Depth between -9 and -11 m.

PIER 3: Under construction - Container Terminal (250m have already been completed / Depth -11m).

PIER 4: Surface 14.000 sq. m. / Three docks (30m., 200m. and 70m.) / Depth between -7m. and -8.5m.

The port is 24/7 operating.

Facilitation of Cruise Ships and Passengers

Infrastructures

The port of Volos provides a secure berthing for cruise ships.

Cruise ships berth at the West dock of Pier 2. Smaller cruise ships can be berthed at the East dock of the Main Pier 4 which is located close to the city center and is near the port's marina.

Superstructures

There is a Cruise Passenger Terminal at Pier 2 and a second terminal that serves smaller Cruise Ships at Main Pier The terminal at Pier 2 is approximately 1200 m. from the city center, is air-conditioned and is equipped with security equipment for passengers and luggages (X-ray machines, cameras etc). The terminal at Main Pier is only 300 m. from the city center, is air-conditioned and provides all the necessary facilities and services for cruise passengers such as waiting areas, water coolers, info-kiosks, Wi-Fi, car and bus parking areas etc. The passenger terminals and the surrounding area have many signs that guide cruise passengers to the city center and the main tourist attractions.

Port Tariffs

  • Port Call cost (cruise ships): 0,009430€ per GRT
  • Berthing Cost (cruise ships): 0,30744448€ per meter per day
  • Mooring Cost: a surplus of 1/3 on the berthing cost
  • Waste reception facilities (Flat rate, cruise ships):
    • <=2.500 GRT: 245,70€ per call
    • 2.501 - 5.000 GRT: 336,70€ per call
    • 5.001-10.000 GRT: 518,70€ per call
    • >10.001GRT: 700,70€ per call
  • Flat rates include: (a) Petroleum waste reception up to 7m3 and delivery time up to 2hrs. Every additional m3 is charged by 40,04€ and every additional hour by 44€. (b) General waste reception up to 5m3 and delivery time up to 1hr. Every additional m3 is charged by 27,30€ and every additional hour by 44€.
    Also there is a cost of 10,00€ for issuing a custom licence.
  • Passenger embarkation/disembarkation costs: 0,32€ per passenger (+ 0,90€ per passenger - ISPS surcharge).

Volos Port Authority S.A. implements a port facilities' security plan and is fully complied with the ISPS Code requirements. Volos Port Authority S.A. is strongly committed to security and closely observes and follows any new security initiative/rule/regulation implemented at international, European and national level.

Within the framework of environmental protection and sustainable development, Volos Port Authority S.A. has been awarded the "Port Environmental Review System" certification for environmental issues by the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the ECOPORTS Foundation.
Moreover, in harmonisation with the Community Directive 2000/59/CE and the MARPOL 73/78 Convention, Volos Port Authority S.A. implements a ship's waste reception and management plan.

Strategic Planning

The port and the city of Volos compose an eminent cruise destination, able to be established as a major cruise port in Greece.

Cruise is in the core of the strategic planning of the Port Authority of Volos aiming at enhancing the port attractiveness for cruise companies through a series of initiatives and investments.

Apart from improving the port services provision to cruise ships and cruise passengers, Volos Port Authority S.A. is in the process to design and construct a fully equipped cruise passenger terminal at the Main Pier of the port.

The following pictures shows some architectural drawings from the planned works at the cruise passenger facilitation area at the port of Volos. More specifically the project aims at enhancing the cruise passengers' experience by providing an aesthetic upgrade of the area as well as an upgrade of the quality of the provided services.

The Destination - City of Volos

The Destination - City of Volos

Since prehistoric times, Volos has been one of the most important strategic locations in the whole Mediterranean, an importance attested to by the many notable civilizations that settled here. The Port of Volos enjoys the advantage of being the gateway to the sea for a rich and well-developed hinterland with two million inhabitants. The port of Volos was the starting point of the greatest nautical adventure in ancient mythology, Jason and the Argonaut's expedition.

Touristic attractions

The city of Volos hosts more than 10 museums with the most important of them being the Archaeological Museum with exhibits dated back to the Neolithic Period and the Classic Age. Cruise passengers can also visit the Rail Museum of Thessaly with a permanent exhibition regarding the history of rail in Greece.

The passengers have the ability to explore the local market and the numerous shopping streets of the city which can satisfy their needs. Local cuisine is a "must" in Volos and at the city's seafront and the city center, passengers can discover picturesque tavernas with their distinctive look and character as well as luxurious restaurants.

The region can boast numerous attractions for tourist and gives the cruise companies the opportunity to offer special day tours to their passengers.

METEORA / UNESCO WORLD HERRITAGE SITE

The geological phenomenon of Meteora constitutes a global attraction site and a unique monument of nature. Since the 14th century Meteora has been hosting several monasteries built high on the rocks. Monks have been living in these monasteries as hermits for more than 600 years. Monasteries are decorated with unique items and paintings of Byzantine art. The view from the top of the rocks is simply breathtaking. In 1989 UNESCO enlisted Meteora as a monument of world heritage.

PELION

Mount Pelion looms over the city of Volos. There are 24 beautiful traditional picturesque villages with their own unique architectural features and atmosphere. Pelion has a large number of paths forming an ideal environment for promenaders and for biking activities. Of great interest is the church of Taxiarches in Milies. Pelion offers its hospitality for year-round vacations.

ARCHAELOGICAL SITE OF DIMINI AND SESCLO

The port and the city of Volos lie close to the oldest, most important and fully excavated settlements from the Neolithic era in Europe: Dimini and Sesclos, also lie over the traces of the three important ancient cities: Iolkos, Pagases and Dimitriada.

BEACHES

In a short distance from the port of Volos, visitors can enjoy some of the numerous beaches, many of them been awarded the "Blue Flag" status. In many beaches, several sea sport activities are offered to the visitors.

Volos can offer a variety of shore excursion to cruise companies, ranging from archaeological tours to specialized tours (biking, sea sports etc).
